Lye Cloque Samples

Lye cloque creates textured fabric by treating cloth containing cellulose fibers such as cotton or linen with a strong base (25% NaOH AKA lye). The lye causes the cellulose to shrink. Texture results when some portions of the cloth have been designed to shrink more than others.

The top row of samples are 100% cotton with long floats on the back that shrank in the lye resulting in texture. The bottom row of samples were woven from both cellulose and noncellulose yarns. Both the weave structures and the mixed fibers helped create the final texture. The triple weave sample was woven flat using two nylon warps and one linen warp. Its curves appeared only when the cloth was treated with lye.
